Thank you for remembering my Brother Al in your Prayers.

He will have a Stent put in his left Carotid Artery. The Right Carotid is completely blocked and cannot be repaired. The Doctors now believe this was the cause of his stroke.

The procedure to open the left artery with a stent is scheduled for 2:30pm PST Feb 7th.

My Mama has had about 5 heart caths since 1998 and one of those was to insert two stents, so I know how those things are done and all. I will be praying that God guide the doctors hands and that your brother does well with recovery.

Mama has a blood disorder and is on blood thinners because of her heart, so she bleeds so easily. On top of that, she is allergic to iodine which is one of the ingredients in the dye that they used with her during each heart cath, so between both issues, she had a rough time but otherwise, she did just fine. I pray that your brother has no complications at all and that his ride to recovery is 100% smooth and successful.

Another thing, are they going to insert the medicated stents or the stainless steel stents? I don't want to bug you but I've heard that there have been problems with the medicated ones. My Mama has the non-coated stainless steel ones and they've been in for about 5 years now with no problems at all. Last time the doctors went in to check how things are doing, there was no new blockage and that was a year after the stents had been put in. Of course, I am not going to tell you which ones for him to get, but just thought I would mention that in case you were not aware of it. You may want to talk to your brother and have him ask the doctor about the different kinds (if it hasn't already been discussed) to make sure that he gets the best possible ones. If the doctor hasn't already mentioned this, I would recommend bringing it up and getting as much info as you can.

Anyway, Thank you all for your Prayers. When he arrrived at the hospital, they told him there were no beds available due to Emergencies, and since his was an "Elective Surgery" (WHAT???) It is put off until tomorrow or next week. Very upsetting for us.
