My sweet, sweet Ember is in surgery at the moment. I am awaiting news on how she is and what they will be doing.

Back in February she got a ruputered Anal Gland that we have been treating and it seemed to be doing well until a few days ago when it ulcerated and inverted. The vet is concerned and she has now had to sedate her (go under the knife so to speak) and go into the gland to see how we will proceed with getting her better. She is not sure if she can fix it and she may just simply have to remove it.

I am a very nervous fur-mama awaiting word on how she is doing and your prayers would be welcomed.

Will let you know what happens.

Thanks all - Em is home. They went in and cleaned it all out - it was very enflamed, way too enflamed to do much else at this point. I had it all healed last week and it just blew up again. They cleaned it, cultured it and put her on another series of anti-biotics and pain meds. I take her back next week and we will monitor her for the next two months and at that point they may have to actually remove it but it is just too raw to risk that right now. While that is a relatively minor surgery, the gland is very close to nerves that can render her unable to go to the bathroom if they get to close to them, so they are very cautious doing the surgery. She is a bit dopey but they said she is just the sweetest girl they have ever met. She was really good and very brave and oh so happy to see me when I got there. Now she really gets to be a princess and just be waited on hand and foot. LOL.

Thanks so much for your prayers - it is always scary when they have to be put under like that.

Yes, it sure is. Frown I HATE the idea of leaving Nero, as he's fine with strangers but he's not excited by greeting people he doesn't know. Story, on the other hand, is a social butterfly. angel angel

Ember must have had alot of pain with that. Frown
Poor girl. She's such a sweety. You can't help but love her. eq

I'm sure she's happier now they fixed her up. I hope your able to get this under control. It's a bad situation with that flaring up. Poor Ember.

BTW did you go on, The Great Dane Lady's site, and read what she wrote about, anals? reader
She's one smart lady. Maybe she has some advice for you for Ember.

Sarah I did read about that on her site - it was one of the first places I went back in Feb when this first started. She actually says to do everything you can before having it removed, which is what I plan on doing.

It is just a bad area to try and get healed and it takes a very long time to heal. We will just start over and get her all better again and go from there. Hoping she does not have to have it removed, but if this keeps happening to her, we may not have a choice.

It is quite painful from what I understand and just breaks my heart that she hurts so. She has shown no aggression whatsoever towards anyone during all of this, which says a lot about her temperament. Yesterday morning when the vet was checking her she just cried like a baby, it broke my heart that she hurt so. Hence the decision to sedate her so that they could examine her properly and see what was really going on in there. Some dogs would get very ouchy about this but not my sweet girl.

Thanks again for you kind posts everyone.
